Coal mining has happened in Christian County Illinois beginning in the late 1800′s and is accompanied by a rich and varied history which ranges from outright violence to extreme benevolence and all points in between. Many people have written about it but two stand out. One is Carl Oblinger who wrote “Divided Kingdom” which treats the coal mine wars of the 1930′s in Taylorville and Christian County Illinois. This Doctoral Thesis is based on a compilation of interviews of surviving miners and spouses pointing up the struggle between the United Mine Workers and the Progressive Mine Workers of America to represent the miners in this area. Later yet, a history teacher, Kevin Corley, mined the rich archives of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum to create a fictional piece portraying the lives of mining families during those turbulent times entitled, “16 Tons”. Kevin Corley will speak to the Friends of the Library Thursday, April 17, 2014 beginning at 7:00 PM. This lecture is free and open to the public and refreshments will be provided. This writer and his wife were born and reared in Taylorville, IL and have seen many years of people trying to sweep this era under the rug and keep it out of sight. Martial Law was invoked and the Illinois National Guard took up residence to control violence. I feel that when you have lemons you should make lemonade and would like to see recurring reenactments of some of the events which took place on our National Registry Historic Square. We hope your “Historic Bug” bites you and you plan to attend this and other such events at the Taylorville Public Library.

Celebrating the birth of Christ was the beginning of the holiday and it surely has grown and evolved over the centuries. There is a lot of joy in bringing your loved ones out to the country to select and cut your own fresh tree to grace your home for the season. Engdale Christmas Tree Farms in Taylorville, Illinois is the place for you to come to pick out and cut your own tree. Engdale grows Scotch Pines at their farm here but some folks want White Pines or Fraser Firs.
Look for this sign along with our directions
The friendly folks at Engdale Farms recognize this and import trees which do not grow well here, but they take exceptional care to insure that your pre-cut tree is as fresh as possible. All imported trees are certified Michigan Fresh trees and were NOT cut before November 1. Most of the pre-cut trees you may see on tree lots were cut well before November 1 and have aged considerably before getting to your local sales point. Engdale offers you only the freshest trees available. Things are generally more reasonably priced out here in the country and your fresh cut or pre-cut tree from Engdale Christmas Tree Farms will probably be less expensive than those you find in the city. Engdale Christmas Tree Farms will open for tree cutting and tree sales on November 30, 2013. Be sure to bring your own saw.
Here at the Market Street Inn Bed and Breakfast, just about 5 minutes from Engdale Christmas Tree Farms, we have beautifully appointed guest rooms for you to enjoy when you come here to spend a night or two while taking in the sites and picking out your Christmas tree. We have fireplaces and nice warm beverages for you to sip and enjoy. We have whirlpool tubs for two for you and your loved one to relax and reconnect in. For years folks have come here for a family outing to stay and pick out their tree. We have a discount for your two or more night stay. We are decorated for Christmas and wish to share it with you. By the way, we are open for touring on December 6 & 7, 2013 for the Taylorville Christmas Tour of Homes.
