The Hotel Package
www.youtube.com
Hotels have begun offering Bed and Breakfast packages and so we in the Bed and Breakfast business have decided to offer a Hotel Package. What a deal!
When you come to Christian County Illinois and to the County Seat of Taylorville, place where you get the absolute most for your lodging buck is the Market Street Inn Bed and Breakfast.  If you are looking for restaurants with websites for proof that they are here you will not find it.  We have several restaurants with great food, great prices and no websites.  There is usually a band playing somewhere in town on weekend nights and we have great bars with very reasonably priced drinks but no websites.  Ride the Lincoln Prairie Hike and Bike Trail which is just 6 blocks from our front door.  Play golf at Taylorville Lake Shore Golf Course which is rated 4.5 by Golf Digest.  Snuggle up with your partner and enjoy the ambiance of “fire” in an electric fireplace all year round or  our gas fireplaces in the cold months.  Check out our rave reviews  on Trip Advisor and Bed&Breakfast.com regarding our breakfasts, our coffee and our service.  Go a few minutes away to Springfield, IL and visit the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum and treat yourself to a Springfield Culinary Creation, a “Horse Shoe”.  If you are looking for life in the slow lane, we can offer some of that too.  Bring your fishing license and pole and wet your line at Lake Taylorville or Sangchris Lake.  We can probably find a place for you to ride a horse if you provide us with a week’s notice.  Good things and good fun happen here.  Come and stay a few nights.

Looking for the perfect Christmas gift?

Saturday, October 27th, 2012

Are you looking for the perfect Christmas gift for your adult children and/or your adult grandchildren? Buy them the gift that pays for itself and never quits giving.  Make the down payment on the purchase of our fine inn and put them into a profitable business which will pay for itself and keep them from being unemployed.  Form a partnership w/ family or friends.   Many people will spend much more on their loved ones for Christmas and give them something which provides little or no return and is soon worn out and unused. The gift of a successful inn will provide many happy times over the years and your loved ones will be ever grateful.  Down payment idea:  convert your IRA to a self-directed IRA.  Form a partnership w/ family or friends.  Come  pay us a visit and ask Myrna to tell you all about our inn, its success over the past 18 years, the ROI, the wonderful guests we meet and host from all over the world, 38 countries to be exact and how the guests continue to return time after time. Rent the remaining rooms for Christmas week, have your Christmas around our tree and make the presentation a surprise to the recipient(s).  Or possibly an early Christmas over Thanksgiving weekend.

We have two optional properties which could provide homes for two or more families who could share the duties of operating a profitable inn as well as the innkeeper quarters in the main house.  One of these is the Carriage House which is shown on our website (includes a 2 bedroom loft apartment upstairs, not shown on website) and the other is a Mission Style home across the street from the main inn.

“Chillifest” is spelled with 2 L’s because there are 2 L’s in Illinois

Sunday, October 7th, 2012

Fall is a fun time here in the middle of the US and the very middle of Illinois. The leaves turn yellow, gold and red, there is the smell of smoke from the fireplace in the air and that wonderful aromatic soup called “chilli” sounds like a bone and body warmer this time of year. Saturday and Sunday, October 13 and 14 are the dates for the 27th annual Greater Taylorville Chamber of Commerce “Chillifest” which is held on the Historic Taylorville Square. Compete as a chili or salsa cook, dine on Award Winning Chilli, participate in the events and enjoy the music on the stages. Two days of homey fun and frolic. Visit the Chillifest webpage http://www.chillifest.info/content/?id=2012 and see all of the official activities and then go to http://www.marketstreetinn.com/events.html and check out what else is happening this weekend too.  If you are staying with us this is also the 2nd Saturday of the month and that means that at 2 PM the Market Street Inn Bed and Breakfast BYO Taste and Share Wine Event happens.  Most folks also bring a snack to share with the others who attend.  If you are staying at the inn we supply your wine.  Of course, consumers of other beverages also attend and enjoy.

Flash, one of the founders of this event just won the International Chili Society 1st prize for Green Chili or Chili Verde.

Taylorville’s Hall earns world title, green chili

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) —  Bob Hall of Taylorville has claimed title, once again, to the best green chili in the world. Hall has been named the world champion in the the green chili division at the International Chili Society World’s Chili Championships in Charleston, West Virginia. Hall won the title also in 2009.

After winning the ‘09 title, Hall credited friends, Don Marsango, Wally Hiel and the late Bill Gasper, all Taylorville natives, as the inspiration for him to compete in chili cookoffs.

In 1986, Hall, along with Marsango and Gasper, started the Chillifest held annually in Taylorville.

Hall, and friends, went to the Association of Commerce and Industry, now known as the Greater Taylorville Chamber of Commerce, for assistance with underwriting the event.

The trio made chili and sold it to fund the first Chillifest. Chili sales still fund the event 23 years after inception.

The Chillifest will be held this Saturday and Sunday on the Taylorville square.

The ICS recognizes the Chillifest as the Chillinois Regional, and the winners of all three divisions on Saturday and Sunday qualify to compete in next year’s world championships.

Bob Plager of Littleton, Colo., has been crowned the top maker of traditional red chili. Plager was presented a $25,000 check after beating out dozens of others Sunday at the ICS signature event in Charleston.

Carrie Lentz Parker of Leesburg, Va., finished second and Plager’s wife, Kathy, was third. Last year’s world champion, John Jepson of Merced, Calif., finished fourth.

World champions crowned in other events earlier included Jerry Buma of Northbridge, Mass., in salsa, and Tom Pardikes of Plymouth, Mich., in homestyle chili. Buma also won the red chili world event in 2007.

The world championships also were held in Charleston in 2009. The contest heads to Palm Springs, Calif., next year.

The championships take place every October and were started by H. Allen Smith, of Decatur, IL.

Building facelift on our National Registry historic town square

Friday, June 29th, 2012

Brenda and Gary Spurling, owners of Spurling Title Service have embarked on a facelift of their location on the South Side of the Taylorville, IL Town Square. The Square and a block or so in each direction have long been designated on the National Registry of Historic Places and restoration of many of the building facades are taking place.

Facelift for an old building

Please note the date on the peak of the facade as being 1892. This building and the Market Street Inn were both built in the same year, only 400 years after Columbus discovered America.

The pressed metal facade has been scraped of loose paint and is being painted in a complementing color scheme. Prior to this the building front was all white which is still visible in the lower right corner.
If you note the building to the left, a brick structure, you will see a facelift which was accomplished several years ago by Brett Mason.

Architectural enthusiasts will find cast iron facades by Mesker Brothers and Capitol Iron Foundry in our historic district as well. We love it when folks walk and gawk at the remaining beauty of our square.

This entree was followed by a “sweet ending” of St. Louis Gooey Butter Cake.

We had guests from all over Illinois, New York City and St. Louis
