Christmas Comes but Once a Year

Sunday, November 24th, 2013

Celebrating the birth of Christ was the beginning of the holiday and it surely has grown and evolved over the centuries. There is a lot of joy in bringing your loved ones out to the country to select and cut your own fresh tree to grace your home for the season. Engdale Christmas Tree Farms in Taylorville, Illinois is the place for you to come to pick out and cut your own tree. Engdale grows Scotch Pines at their farm here but some folks want White Pines or Fraser Firs.

The friendly folks at Engdale Farms recognize this and import trees which do not grow well here, but they take exceptional care to insure that your pre-cut tree is as fresh as possible. All imported trees are certified Michigan Fresh trees and were NOT cut before November 1.  Most of the pre-cut trees you may see on tree lots were cut well before November 1 and have aged considerably before getting to your local sales point.  Engdale offers you only the freshest trees available.  Things are generally more reasonably priced out here in the country and your fresh cut or pre-cut tree from Engdale Christmas Tree Farms will probably be less expensive than those you find in the city. Engdale Christmas Tree Farms will open for tree cutting and tree sales on November 30, 2013. Be sure to bring your own saw.Fields of Trees

Here at the Market Street Inn Bed and Breakfast,  just about 5 minutes from Engdale Christmas Tree Farms, we have beautifully appointed guest rooms for you to enjoy when you come here to spend a night or two while taking in the sites and picking out your Christmas tree. We have fireplaces and nice warm beverages for you to sip and enjoy.  We have whirlpool tubs for two for you and your loved one to relax and reconnect in.  For years folks have come here for a family outing to stay and pick out their tree.  We have a discount for your two or more night stay.  We are decorated for Christmas and wish to share it with you.  By the way, we are open for touring on December 6 & 7, 2013 for the Taylorville Christmas Tour of Homes.

Garlic is a good reason to have a party!

Wednesday, October 24th, 2012

Small towns are great because many folks know and trust and love one another and really have fun getting together and making a party for almost any reason. Garlic is a good reason to have a party. “Garlic Fest II” happens on Sunday, October 28 from 1 to 8 PM in the Morrisonville K of C Hall in Morrisonville, IL just about 10 miles from our front door. Have you ever heard of Bagna Cauda? It is

a rich, creamy sauce made from anchovies, butter, cream and garlic for dipping bread, cabbage and all sorts of other things in to get it onto your taste buds. One taste and you will crave more. Bagna happens from 1:30 to 4 PM. The main course is fresh, homemade garlic sausage, mostaccioli, garlic bread and slaw. Of course, there is a cash bar with your favorite liquid refreshments to wash this all down with. Music will be provided by “The Music Men” and, as usual, a good time of dining and dancing will be held by all. Tickets are $8 in advance or $10 at the door. Don’t miss it! Be sure to get there early, the doors open at 12:30 PM, in order to get a seat and to not miss the Bagna.

Simple Pleasures

Friday, October 16th, 2009

Sometimes the best times are not the big events. In fact, sometimes the simplest things create the most special moments. A spontaneous getaway to our Central Illinois bed and breakfast, with no plans other than serious rest and relaxation, can make for lovely lasting memories. It may not be as glamorous as jetting off to New York City or London, but heck, it’s a lot less expensive, too!

Taylorville Illinois is a peaceful, quaint town. We are close to Springfield, and often take advantage of all that great city has to offer, such as the historical sites about Abraham Lincoln, the Hoogland Center for the Arts, the Springfield Theatre Centre, and the Muni, Springfield’s Opera.

Often, however, we like to enjoy the simple pleasures of Taylorville. Walking less than a mile down the street to Gambino’s Family Restaurant, where we indulge in New Orleans cajun food and beignets. When we want a shorter walk, we head two blocks down the street to One East Market, Taylorville’s most upscale eatery. Live music happens at both of the restaurants from time to time, and that makes the food even better.

Lingering over coffee after a tasty breakfast here at our Taylorville b&b is another lovely way to pass the time, as is enjoying a soak in your whirlpool or curling up with a good book in our common areas. Be spontaneous. Let someone else pamper you for a while. Pack your bags and head down the road to Taylorville!

Celebrities at our Taylorville bed and breakfast

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

It’s true that Taylorville is a quiet town, but that is what makes it appealing. In fact, quite a few celebrities have been drawn to Taylorville for one reason or another, and many have even found their way to our charming Taylorville Illinois hotel. What follows is a tribute to the folks who have helped add a little spark of celebrity over the years to the Market Street Inn.

Mickey Rooney @ RKO Palace

Mickey Rooney stayed at our Taylorville b&b

Mickey Rooney and his wife once stayed in the Chimney Room, while other members of their entourage stayed in other rooms.

Fans of The Office will be happy to learn that Jenna Fischer stayed in the Lilac Room, soon to be renamed the Hoover Room. Her parents plan to return to us.

Singers since the early 1960s, The Lettermen are together again and frequently on tour. Tony Butala had the Chimney Room, Darren Dowler (no longer part of the group) stayed in the Rose Room, and Donovan Tea stayed in the Lilac Room .

Singer Sammy Kershaw stayed in the Rose Room, while the rest of the group spread out in the main house.

Known to some as the greatest country band in the universe, the Sawyer Brown group once took over the third floor which is comprised of the Clocktower Room, Summit Room and Eagles’ Nest.

Before his gubernatorial days, Governor Jon Corzine and his then wife were the first people to stay on our brand new third floor in the Summit Room. Other guests and family were spread out in the main house.

Not all of our “celebrity” guests are known to the public; some gain celebrity here, at our Taylorville Illinois bed and breakfast. For example, one gentleman stayed with us for 4.5 years, occupying the Sweet Violet room. He worked for a local firm while his family stayed back in the Albany, NY area. After the daughters graduated from high school the man and his wife built a home here. (Their daughters were deeply involved in ballet at a level that is not available locally.)

Another long-term guest from the same company stayed with us for 2 years. Being from the Los Angeles, CA area, he preferred the cozy Spring Garden Room, which has a gas log fireplace.

We welcome all sorts of folks to our Taylorville bed and breakfast, and we treat them all like celebrities.
