It is Christmas Eve and look at our tree!

Thursday, December 24th, 2009

Yes, this is the main tree in the inn and for the past 5 years families have converged upon us from various points in the US and met at the Market Street Inn with their gifts and families and held their gift exchange in our front parlor. What fun they have and what fun we have along with them. Truly Christmas is one of the most wonderful times of the year. If the Grinch came in and stole all the gifts, our guests would realize that they have each other and in good health. Family is one of the real meanings of Christmas.

Take Me Out to the Ball Game

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009
Alex Rodriguez

Throw your heart into the game, even if you are just watching.

Baseball season is underway. Fans gather around televisions, listen to radios, and fill stadiums in pursuit of this great American past time. The porch of our bed and breakfast in Taylorville Il is the perfectly spot to enjoy a pitcher of lemonade, a bowl of nuts, and the lulling voice of the announcer giving the play-by-play. Outdated, some might say, in this age of television. We have t.v., too, but sometimes it is worth revisiting old pleasures.

The front porch or the parlor chair in front of the television might just be as close as one can get to a major league baseball game here in Taylorville Illinois, but the spirit of the game is alive and well in the area nonetheless. Just a few miles up the road from our Central Illinois bed and breakfast is the B-R-S Baseball Museum. If you are a baseball fan, this museum is a lovely way to pass an hour or two while you are staying with us.

The Nokomis area of Central Illinois has produced many excellent baseball players; three of them not only made it to the big league, they made it the Hall of Fame: “Sunny” Jim Bottomley, Charles “Red” Ruffing and Ray Schalk. This museum is dedicated to them. Whether you are visiting the Springfield Illinois area for business or pleasure, if you have a spare hour, check out the B-R-S Museum.

Lincoln Bicentennial: Lincoln’s History in Taylorville, IL

Thursday, December 18th, 2008

Our 1892 Queen Anne Victorian inn is located in the town of Taylorville, a central Illinois community in Lincolnland. Taylorville was sometimes referred to as “the last stop” by Lincoln and his cohorts; it was the last place Lincoln traveled to on his circuit. Lincoln and his fellow lawyers, including Stephen A. Douglas, rode the 8th judicial circuit.

Our courthouse, now part of the Christian County Historical Museum,  was the site of many Lincoln trials. The Courthouse, built in 1839, has been totally restored, using the original architectural specifications for construction. Interior furnishings echo other old courtrooms of the period. The museum complex also includes other buildings of the period as well as a local history museum.

Recently Christian County further restored the lovely courthouse by exposing a spectacular glass dome that had been hidden by a false ceiling. The courthouse is the center of town square, flanked by a number of shops and restaurants. Come and check out our historic town, where Lincoln exerted his political influence. We look forward to seeing you at our Illinois Bed and Breakfast!
