Located in the heart of Lincolnland, Taylorville was the “last stop” on Abraham Lincoln’s circuit as an attorney in Central Illinois. Our 16th President argued cases in a log courthouse which is preserved, along with other buildings of the period, at our Christian County Historical Museum. During Abe Lincoln’s tenure as a circuit attorney, there was a day when court proceedings were repeatedly interrupted by the sound of pigs lounging under the Court House porch. Abraham Lincoln, in a moment of humor, asked the judge to issue a “writ of quietus” to legally quell the interrupting noises from the pigs.Within Taylorville there is a coal miners’ museum as well as the Christian Co. Historical Society, which offers a village of 6 buildings, including one where Abraham Lincoln practiced law.

  • Activities in the area include: golfing, biking on the Lincoln Prairie trail, hiking, and shopping.
  • Stay in shape at the nearby YMCA or one of several fitness clubs, and then relax at a local day spa.
  • There are boating, fishing or swimming at any of several lakes within a 30-mile radius and skydiving at Mid America Sport Parachute Club.
  • Lakeshore Golf Course at Lake Taylorville
  • Dark Horse Riding Center offers horseback riding 7 days per week with advance reservations. Dark Horse has both indoor and outdoor arenas as well as a nearby wooded area for trail rides.

Just 25 minutes away in Illinois’ capitol of Springfield you can enjoy various Abraham Lincoln sites including the Lincoln library and former home, as well as numerous museums.

Local Restaurants:

Florinda’s is an Italian restaurant located just 2.5 blocks from our front door. Florinda’s features pasta, pizza and sandwiches. Wine and beer are offered as well. Florinda and her parents came from Sicily in 2000. Closed Mondays.

Krieger’s Sports Bar and Grill has a wide offering of steaks, ribs, pizza, fish and sandwiches. As one would expect at a sports bar, screens surround the room with sporting events. Of course, there is a full bar here. Krieger’s is located about 10 blocks from the Market Street Inn.

Round Table Restaurant offers a very wide selection of all your favorite foods. A several page menu is sometimes mind boggling but good. Steaks, fish, chicken, pork and specialty sandwiches such as Gyros and Greek salad are available. This restaurant has a full bar and is just 6 blocks from us.

Charro serves up some fine Mexican fare for your enjoyment. All of your Mexican favorites and mine (Chiles Poblano/Chiles Rellano) are found here along with the expected fixings and liquid refreshments. Charro has a sister restaurant in Chesterfield, MO called El Charro that offers the same menu. Located less than 2 miles from our inn.

China Pavilion Restaurant is located just 6 blocks from us and will fully satisfy your yen for Chinese food. Many of our guests from the Far East find a real touch of home there. We have watched the owners’ children grow from infancy through college graduation. Closed on Mondays.

Bill’s Toasty Shop is a Taylorville institution and has been around for longer than your innkeepers, but we have only been around since 1943. Open 24/7, Bill’s offers one of the world’s greatest hamburgers, but unless you have a huge appetite, don’t order two. Of course there are fries, shakes and other goodies. Bill’s is located just 3.5 blocks from our front door.

Sugardaddy’s Tastee Treet offers some food items but is mostly known for their frozen custard and frozen yogurt. If you have never tried lemon-flavored frozen custard, well… Sugardaddy’s is located about 1.5 miles from the Market Street Inn and worth the drive.

Kentucky Fried Chicken in Taylorville is different than most in that it also has a buffet, which features all of the KFC products as well as veggies, cobbler, soft serve, and more of the same.

This restaurant listing is far from complete but hits the highlights. Of course we have the normal amount of national fast food and pizza places along with a variety of bars, some of which might serve pizza or a sandwich or two. Just ask your innkeepers for other offerings. If you wish to drive a bit, there are hundreds of restaurants within 30 minutes.
