Located in the heart of Lincolnland, Taylorville was the “last stop” on Abraham Lincoln’s circuit as an attorney in Central Illinois. Our 16th President argued cases in a log courthouse which is preserved, along with other buildings of the period, at our Christian County Historical Museum. During Abe Lincoln’s tenure as a circuit attorney, there was a day when court proceedings were repeatedly interrupted by the sound of pigs lounging under the Court House porch. Abraham Lincoln, in a moment of humor, asked the judge to issue a “writ of quietus” to legally quell the interrupting noises from the pigs.Within Taylorville there is a coal miners’ museum as well as the Christian Co. Historical Society, which offers a village of 6 buildings, including one where Abraham Lincoln practiced law.

  • Activities in the area include: golfing, biking on the Lincoln Prairie trail, hiking, and shopping.
  • Antiquing happens here. Just ask your innkeeper for directions.
  • Stay in shape at the nearby YMCA or one of several fitness clubs, and then relax at a local day spa.
  • There are boating, fishing or swimming at any of several lakes within a 30-mile radius and skydiving at Mid America Sport Parachute Club.
  • Lake Shore Golf Course at Lake Taylorville.   18 holes

Just 25 minutes away in Illinois’ capitol of Springfield, you can enjoy various Abraham Lincoln sites including the Lincoln library and former home, as well as numerous museums.  The Governor’s mansion, renovated in 2018, is available for tours.
